-Wear clothes that you've made: You don’t need to be an expert seamstress. At a minimum get yourself a sewing machine and start customising your own garments. However, if you want to take being a fashion designer to the next level, take proper sewing lessons, that way you will be able to learn the basic technical rules then as a designer it will be your job to break them. This rule applies to anything creative.

-Make fabric shopping a part of you weekly routine - at least once a week: Live and breath fabric shops. You can't call yourself a fashion designer if you don’t know anything about fabrics. Get to know how they feel against your skin and the weight, how much they cost, then you can immediately start visualising what your going to make.

-Be clear who your target maker is: When you start your brand, target a specific market. No brand in the world is for everybody. Once you stick to a particular market that you want to design for then you can establish your own style quicker and this is how customers will become loyal to you. By all means, in the future you can branch off and create new styles for different consumers, which is what the industry calls a diffusion line.

-Be able to work under pressure: The fashion industry is all about people wanting things done yesterday. They key thing is to learn how to work fast without compromising quality and this is where you have to practise, practise and practise

-Be patient: I can’t stress this enough. With the whole social media game, it looks like people are blowing up overnight and anyone who does blow up overnight is probably buying followers. Don’t worry about any of that, focus on becoming an expert and then people will naturally gravitate to your brand.
